More plumbing terms: Earth Bonding, Stop Cock, Olive, Plumbing Snake??!!

Continuing our series of blogs on some unusual plumbing terms here are a few more:

Earth Bonding. Sounds like something the Flower People got up to after a day at Woodstock or a levy on a Californian beach. But it’s not. No it’s quite serious. A legal safety requirement to have all metal parts within a plumbing system connect to earth to prevent them becoming electrically dangerous. To do this you use an earth strap. It’s not a whip it’s  metal strap used to achieve 'earth bonding' by joining the metal pipes and fittings together to provide an electrical earth path.

Stop Cock is not a shout from a market stall holder to a scallywag who’s run off with a bunch of bananas, it is simple a valve (cock) that stops water flowing. Every property will have a main stopcock where the water comes in  and there will be others throughout the plumbing and heating systems at points where it might be useful to stop the flow.

Olive was the girlfriend of Popeye the sailorman who seemed to eat nothing but spinach which gave him enormous arm muscles. James Bond  always had one in his vodka martinis whilst Cleopatra used to bathe in oil produced by squashing olives  when she couldn’t get enough asses milk, so quite frequently then. In plumbing terms however, an olive is a brass or copper compression ring used in compression couplings used when joining copper pipes to taps and valves.

Plumbing Snake . Not a tricky tradesman on the make  with knocked off lengths of copper pipe but a thin  flexible length of spiral-wound metal which is inserted into a drain or waste and then rotated to clear anything clogging the pipes.
