From the moment the first door was hung, something was
needed to keep it closed. Initially a rock or piece of tree trunk would have
done the job, albeit crudely, perhaps a bit of cloth or rope on a nail.
However as times progressed latches were invented.
“Suffolk” latch is now a generic term for latches made by
metal workers and blacksmiths and came to the fore in the early mid 1700’s in
East Anglia. You can buy the same item made the same way today with either a
rounded end (Bean) or a more Gothic shape (Arrowhead) . You may come across the
term Norfolk latch. This is functionally the same as a Suffolk but the
components tend to be factory produced rather than hand forged . As
industrialisation crept in and cheaper production methods were developed, the
Suffolk latch was superceded by the low cost spun brass door knob.
It is my opinion however that a ledge and brace plank door
must have a Suffolk latch
We supply door latches in hand forged steel or cast iron for
internal or external use on plank doors and garden gates.
